Holmes Construction invests in Canterbury talent through new Ara scholarship

Holmes Construction Waitaha Limited and Ara Institute of Canterbury have launched a new scholarship to support learners moving into their second year of construction and project management study.

The Holmes Construction Waitaha Trades Scholarship offers financial support and industry connections for eligible learners.

Holmes Construction has been part of New Zealand's construction industry for more than 65 years. Since establishing its presence in Waitaha, the company has focused on building strong connections across the region.

Group Director Marc Jurlina said supporting learners was a natural extension of the company's commitment to Canterbury.

"It's not just about building buildings for us. It's about establishing community connection and being here for the long haul. We don't do things for short-term success. We want to invest in this region for the long term."

Ara Dean of Applied Technologies Peter Sauer said the partnership showed what industry and education can achieve by working together to meet the needs of a growing sector.

"Canterbury continues to see strong growth in construction and infrastructure, and demand for skilled people remains high. We appreciate Holmes Construction recognising this need and supporting learners who have chosen to build their future in this sector.

"Their belief in our ākonga and investment in their success will help students gain confidence, capability and a clear pathway into meaningful work."

The scholarship is open to learners progressing into the second year of their:

• New Zealand Diploma in Construction (Construction Management or Quantity Surveying)
• Bachelor of Construction (Construction Management or Quantity Surveying)
• Bachelor of Applied Management (Project Management)

Holmes Construction General Manager (South) Ben Watson knows first-hand the opportunities that can come from studying at Ara.

"I started my Bachelor of Engineering at Ara back in 2013. I really enjoyed my time there, and I'm stoked to now be part of the Holmes team supporting the next generation into the construction industry,” he said.

"We need good people coming through, and if we can help someone take that next step while giving them a real connection to the industry, that's a pretty good outcome."

The scholarship provides up to $8000 in course fee support along with additional practical support and the opportunity to be considered for future internship pathways within Holmes Construction.

Applications open on 10 August 2026 and close on 30 September 2026.
