Growing demand for applied learning as Ara Open Day registrations top 1,200

More than 1200 prospective learners and their whānau have pre-registered for Ara Institute of Canterbury's Open Day, with registrations reaching record levels for the event.

The response reflects growing interest in practical, industry-connected learning across programme areas that support Canterbury's workforce needs, including health, trades and construction, engineering, information technology, education and community services.

Demand has been particularly strong for nursing, prompting organisers to add an additional information session in Christchurch after registrations exceeded expectations for one of Ara's most sought-after programmes.

With larger than usual crowds expected on Thursday, visitors are encouraged to pre-register, check session times before arriving, allow extra time for parking and arrive early for popular information sessions.

Held later in the year than usual, the event comes at a time when many secondary school ākonga have reached the midpoint of their final year and are beginning to consider their study and career options for 2027.

Ara Manager of Community and Outreach Blair Kaad said Open Day gives people the opportunity to explore how study can lead to meaningful careers and discover pathways they may not have previously considered.

"People want to understand how study can connect the dots between what they're interested in and where they want to end up. Open Day gives them a chance to explore pathways into areas like health, trades, engineering, technology and education, and see what learning at Ara is really like."

"For many, it'll be the first time they've stepped onto a campus and started imagining themselves here. You often see people arrive with a rough idea of what they want to do and leave with a completely different perspective on the opportunities available to them."

While many visitors will be looking ahead to future study, those considering a career change, upskilling or a return to learning may find they can start sooner than expected, with places still available in a range of programmes beginning in 2026.

"If you've been thinking about study, this is a great chance to come in, explore your options and see whether there's a programme that could get you started sooner than you might think," Kaad said.

Visitors to Timaru's Arthur Street campus will have the opportunity to explore study options, join a walk-and-talk session and find out more about student services.

At the Woolston Trades campus, visitors can take part in hands-on activities and live demonstrations across Carpentry, Joinery, Painting and Decorating, Electrical, Automotive, Engineering, Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying.

These showcase Ara's practical approach to learning and give prospective learners the opportunity to engage directly with tutors, facilities and training spaces.

"Our campuses are always buzzing on Open Day because people can roll up their sleeves, get involved and experience learning for themselves," Kaad said.

"Meeting tutors, seeing the facilities and talking about where different study options can lead helps people make informed decisions about their future.

"We're expecting a fantastic turnout this year, so it's worth checking the schedule before you arrive, allowing a little extra time for parking and getting along early for the sessions you're most interested in."

Programmes spanning nursing and allied health, trades and construction, engineering, business, hospitality, information technology, creative industries, sustainability, outdoor education, early childhood education and community services will all feature throughout the day.

Open Day takes place on Thursday 6 August from 3pm to 6pm at Ara's Christchurch City campus, Woolston Trades campus and Timaru campus.
