Three Ara enrolled nursing ākonga (students) have been recognised at the 2026 Kim Milward Awards, acknowledging academic excellence, clinical excellence and compassionate care.

The awards were presented as the cohort completed their coursework and prepared for state finals.

Kim Milward Award for Academic Excellence

Renee Ashworth received the Kim Milward Award for Academic Excellence, recognised for her discipline, focus and determination throughout the programme.

Beginning her studies unsure of her own ability, she went on to achieve at the top of her class. Lecturers highlighted her thoughtful approach to learning, her willingness to ask meaningful questions, and the way she encouraged others to aim high.

She was also acknowledged for her resilience and professionalism while navigating personal loss during her studies.

“It’s been an honour for the team to watch Renee grow and develop throughout the programme,” the Diploma of Enrolled Nursing team said.

Kim Milward Award for Clinical Excellence

Myra Lam received the Kim Milward Award for Clinical Excellence in recognition of her initiative, professionalism and leadership across both academic and clinical settings.

Lecturers noted her strong judgement, emotional maturity and ability to build trust in clinical environments. As class representative, she also demonstrated leadership and advocacy for her peers, helping to create a positive and supportive learning environment.

The Diploma of Enrolled Nursing team described her as a strong advocate for the enrolled nurse pathway who consistently models excellence in practice.

Kim Milward Award for Excellence in Compassion

Lastly, Destiny Clarke received the Kim Milward Award for Excellence in Compassion for the warmth, integrity and care she brings to her practice.

Recognised by associate charge nurses for the quality of her patient care, she was acknowledged for consistently going above and beyond, while staying grounded in her personal values.

The Diploma of Enrolled Nursing team described her as inspirational, recognising her kindness, resilience and commitment to advocating for others.

Senior Academic Staff Member, Gladys Muza, said the recipients reflect the values at the heart of enrolled nursing.

“These three ākonga show exactly what great enrolled nurses look like - capable, compassionate, and ready to make a difference,” she said.

“It’s a privilege to recognise them as they complete their programme and prepare to enter the profession.”

About the Kim Milward awards

The Kim Milward Awards honour the memory of Kim Milward, a respected enrolled nurse and former Ara student who worked at Christchurch Women’s Hospital until her death from breast cancer in 2013.

Established by her whānau and colleagues, the awards recognise ākonga who reflect the qualities she was known for: compassion, professionalism and a commitment to high standards of care.
