I'm a casual team member

Welcome to Ara! As a short term and/or casual employee your safety is paramount to us and it is compulsory you complete our Health and Safety module before you start work with us.

This Health and Safety information is important for you read and understand and by completing the confirmation of understanding within the module you acknowledge your agreement to abide by the Health and Safety requirements within Ara.

If you cannot access or complete this module please contact capabilitydevelopment@ara.ac.nz or call the office on 03 940 8498 and we will arrange for your manager to provide a paper copy for you on starting your new role.

If the Health and Safety has not been completed you will be contacted by a member of the Ara Capability Development team.

During office hours:

City and Woolston Campuses

  • Dial 9999 and advise the nature of the emergency
  • Advise the Health and Safety Manager as soon as practicable on 3 940 8370 or 027 540 8370.

Other sites

  • Dial 1-111 and advise the nature of the emergency.
  • Advise the Health and Safety Manager as soon as practicable.
Outside office hours:

All sites

  • Ring 1-111 and advise the nature of the emergency.
  • To Contact duty security or custodians, phone 03 940 8076 (24 hours)
  • The 9999 number rings on a dedicated emergency phone in the call centre office and will receive priority response during normal office hours. In the unlikely event of no response, it will automatically divert to 111.
  • Ringing 9999 has the advantage of allowing the caller to move away from a dangerous situation or to give assistance without being tied to the phone. The call centre may be able to arrange additional assistance from within Ara while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

An accurate report needs to be completed within 48 hours for any incidents, minor incidents, near misses, safety observations, pain or discomfort or health and wellbeing events involving Ara colleagues, students, visitors or contractors

(Advise the Safety and Wellbeing Manager immediately in the event of a serious injury or incident.)

If you are a current Ara colleague or student please use Safeplace and select from the following categories or contact our Safety and Wellbeing Manager on 021 192 9941.

If you are a visitor or contractor to Ara, please contact the Safety and Wellbeing Manager on 021 192 9941 to report an incident, minor incident or near miss.

Before an alarm sounds

Familiarise yourself with the following:

  • The position of the local fire alarm call points.
  • The position of fire extinguishers and hose reels in the building. Have a close look at the equipment and know how to operate it.
  • The location of the fire evacuation points
  • Make sure all exit ways are kept clear at all times.
  • Ensure that smoke stop doors are not wedged open.
  • Report to the Building Warden (will be wearing a dayglo jacket) at the fire panel. Detail any hazards the Emergency Services may face, ie dangerous goods, chemicals.
  • Hot Work Permits must be obtained from the property supervisor before commencement of hot work.
  • Isolation of fire detection systems may be necessary before work involving heat, smoke, steam, engine exhaust or dust is commenced. A minimum of 24 hours notice is required unless otherwise agreed.
  • Ara will seek costs where a false alarm is triggered by a contractor not following these procedures.
  • Raising the Alarm - Activate a manual call point situated in building exit ways. Call 111 and advise details followed by a call 9999 from an Ara phone for onsite assistance.
  • Only attempt to put out a fire if it is safe to do so.
  • When the Alarm Rings, Evacuate the building by the nearest emergency exit. This will be clearly marked Fire Exit. Follow the fire exit direction indicators which are in conspicuous places throughout the building.
  • Do Not run.
  • Do Not use elevators if provided - move quickly down the stairwells.
  • Do Not collect personal belongings from any part of the building.
  • Evacuees are to assemble in the predetermined assembly area as noted on the displayed emergency notices. You are not to re-enter the building until instructed to do so.
  • Leave lights on. Close windows and doors if safe to do so.
  • Turn off any potentially dangerous processes or machinery if applicable.

You should make yourself known to the Health and Safety Co-ordinator in your department. You can find out who your Co-ordinator is from your line manager or from the Health and Safety Manager.

The Health and Safety Co-ordinator will give you an overview of the policies and procedures within Ara.

If you have any concerns about your safety at work please raise this with your line manager.
